01 · The hub

Where Great Exuma runs its errands.

George Town sits on Elizabeth Harbour, roughly halfway down Great Exuma. It’s the island’s service centre: the grocery, with reverse-osmosis water listed for boaters, the bank, the government clinic, and the Government Dock, where water taxis leave for Stocking Island across the harbour.

Boaters anchor in the harbour and come in by dinghy: Exuma Markets has its own dinghy dock. Most boat days don’t start in town, though. Brown’s Marine, about 10 minutes south, is where several harbour trips leave.

Banking on Great Exuma is concentrated in George Town. RBC operates on the island; Scotiabank closed its Exuma branch. ATMs have had outages, so don’t count on one.

The Ministry of Health lists George Town Community Clinic’s hours as 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday, except public holidays. The list is dated January 2025, so call ahead. The Royal Bahamas Police Force lists 919 and 911 as emergency numbers; we haven’t confirmed ambulance coverage on Exuma.

No roads or bridges go to Stocking Island. You cross Elizabeth Harbour by boat.

Water taxis leave from the Government Dock in George Town, but Coconut Club lists Elvis’ from the Exuma Yacht Club. Confirm where you board when you call.

Staying in town.

Staying in or near town puts you within reach of the grocery, the Government Dock and the Stocking Island water taxis. February Point Resort Estates, a gated marina community with villa rentals, sits on Elizabeth Harbour just minutes from downtown, by its own description.
